A Part of Islington History - The Angel
Situated at the intersection of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road, this historic site has hosted various buildings since the 16th century and mostly been a open to the public.
Originally constructed in 1614 as a coaching inn, the site later became the "Angel Inn". This is also why the nearby tube station was named "Angel".
The building has always been central to the community - it operated as a great entertainment center of London, and later after the Great Fire of 1666, operated as a refuge.
For over two-hundred years, this site continued to serve as an important stop for travelers and locals and enjoyed the patronage of literary and philosophical titans - this was the site in which Thomas Paine wrote the Rights of Man.
In 1921, the building was purchased by Lyons' and opened as the Angel Cafe Restaurant; once more a central point of the Finsbury and Islington communities.
And in 1935 it was in this cafe that the London Monopoly board was developed and even today the classic Monopoly board has many streets, station and one building "The Angel Islington"
Incredibly, it was bought by the council in the 1960s with plans for it to be demolished to widen Pentonville Road. Fortunately this never happened and after a few decades as Co-Op Bank starting in 1979 a new era will soon begin when we hope to once again make this beautiful building a real centerpoint for the Islington and Finsbury communities as it used to be.
